Gender mainstreaming will enhance military operational effectiveness – CDS

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa has said the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) is developing strategies that will enhance it’s operational effectiveness through
gender mainstreaming.

General Musa disclosed this in Abuja on Thursday at the occasion of 2024 Annual Defence Headquarters Gender Conference with the theme:”Mainstreaming Women, Peace, and Security Agenda for Enhanced Operational Efficiency in the Armed Forces of Nigeria”.

Ably represented by the Commandant, National Defence College (NDC), Rear Admiral Olumuyiwa Olotu, the CDS said they would build on the gains of the previous year’s conference in fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment within the armed forces.

He said,”This year as we gather for the second time, we build on that foundation with renewed vigor and
clearer vision. This gathering of our new annual event stands as a testament to our collective
commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment within our armed forces.

“We challenge ourselves to advance further in our pursuit of gender equality and to address the
evolving dynamics within our Armed Forces. It is by continuing to make these efforts that we can
guarantee that our Armed Forces continue to be a representation of justice, respect, opportunity,
strength and security.

“The escalating involvement of women in peace and security initiatives globally, has shown us the transformative power of gender inclusivity. Women during unique perspectives and solutions to the table, contributing significantly to peacekeeping and conflict resolution.

“It is imperative that we harness these potentials within our own forces.
Therefore, this year’s conference is a crucial platform for us to delve deeper into these themes, share knowledge, and develop strategies that will enhance our operational effectiveness through
gender mainstreaming.

“Our discussions today will be pivotal in shaping the future of our Armed
Forces of Nigeria ensuring that we are not only prepared to face current security challenges but are also resilient and adaptive to future ones.”

Gen. Musa expressed appreciation to Her Excellency, Former First Lady of Nigeria, Chief Mrs. Patience Jonathan, for her unwavering dedication and invaluable contributions to the cause of female admission in the Nigerian Defence Academy.

“Ma, I want to personally thank you for your leadership in championing the cause of female admission in the Nigerian Defence Academy. As a
result of your efforts, the first set of Female Regular Cadet popularly known as “Patience Jonathan Girls” was admitted into the NDA 63
Regular Course in 2011.

“This historic decision has paved the way for more women to serve their country in the military. It will interest you to know that these brave and determined women have shattered barriers and continue to serve as role models for future generations of women in the
Armed Forces,” he said.

The CDS appreciated the
laudable initiatives and programmes of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR and the first lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, which he said have empowered women economically and socially.

According to him, they include supporting women entrepreneurs, providing access to finance, and creating opportunities for women in traditionally male-dominated fields. “These programmes have seen of immense benefits to women in the armed forces and the spouses of our gallant troops nationwide,” he said.

The CDS added,”Finally, appreciate the distinguished dignitaries, participants, speaker and organizers for their dedication and contributions to this viral cause. Your presence here today reaffirms our collective commitment to fostering an inclusive
and equitable environment within the AFN.

“As we embark on today’s discussion, let us remain focused on our shared goal to create a military that reflects the diversity and strength of our dear Nation, where every member, regardless of gender, can contribute to our society and peace efforts.”

The Special Guest of Honour, Former Head of State, General Abdulsalam Abubakar said the conference marks a significant milestone in the nation’s journey towards gender equality and inclusivity in the military.

Gen. Abubakar stressed that the theme of the conference is a
recognition that the military’s effectiveness and efficiency depend on the full participation of all its members, regardless of gender.

“As a former Head of State, I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the sacrifices and bravery of our military personnel. I have seen the impact that dedicated and talented individuals can have on our nation’s security and peace.

“Today, we gather to acknowledge the vital role that women play in maintaining peace and security. We recognize that their contributions are not limited to traditional gender roles, but extend to leadership positions, strategic decision-making, and operational excellence.

“Our goal is to create a military that reflects the diversity of our nation, where every officer has an equal opportunity to serve and contribute, regardless of gender. We must work together to address the barriers and biases that have historically limited women’s participation.

“I urge you all to embrace this vision, to champion the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda, and to ensure that our military is a beacon of inclusivity and excellence,” he said.

The high point of the event was the unveiling of the 2nd edition of the Armed Forces Gender Magazine by Her Excellency Patience Jonathan accompanied by other dignitaries. This was followed by the presentation of gifts/ souvenirs.
